Learning Is A Design Problem: Towards A Human-Centred Perspective on Education

Introduction
Education has long been discussed through the language of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and policy. Researchers debate effective teaching strategies, schools invest in educational technologies, and governments continually reform curricula in pursuit of improved learning outcomes.
Underlying these conversations is an assumption that learning is primarily an educational problem: one that can be addressed through better teaching, more effective assessment, or improved institutional structures.
This article argues that such an assumption is incomplete.
Rather than viewing learning solely as an educational challenge, I propose that learning should also be understood as a design problem.
This shift is more than a semantic change. It reframes the role of educators from knowledge transmitters to experience designers, encourages educational institutions to move beyond content delivery, and positions learners not as passive recipients but as active participants in carefully designed learning experiences.

Why Education Often Fails
Educational reforms frequently concentrate on improving components of the educational system.
We redesign curricula.
We introduce new technologies.
We revise assessments.
We provide professional development for teachers.
Each initiative attempts to improve one part of education.
Yet many learners continue to experience disengagement.
This paradox raises an important question.
If educational systems continue to improve, why does meaningful learning remain so difficult?
Perhaps because learning itself has never been simply about education.
Learning is a human experience.
And human experiences are designed.
Learning Is More Than Information Transfer
Traditional models of education often resemble communication models.
Knowledge exists.
Teachers transmit it.
Students receive it.
Assessment measures retention.
While this model may be sufficient for memorising information, it inadequately explains how people actually learn.
People rarely remember information because it was presented.
They remember experiences.
A conversation.
A challenge.
A project.
A mistake.
An emotional moment.
A surprising discovery.
These experiences reshape mental models.
Learning therefore emerges not merely through instruction but through interaction between individuals and their environments.
From this perspective, learning resembles experience design far more than information delivery.
From Instructional Design to Experience Design
Instructional Design has significantly improved educational practice over the past decades.
Frameworks such as ADDIE, Backward Design, Universal Design for Learning, and Constructive Alignment have provided systematic approaches for designing instruction.
Yet many of these models remain fundamentally instructional.
They ask:
What content should be taught?
How should learning be sequenced?
How should achievement be assessed?
These questions remain valuable.
However, they overlook another equally important question.
What experience do we want learners to have?
Experience precedes memory.
Memory shapes understanding.
Understanding changes behaviour.
Design therefore becomes central to learning.
Human-Centred Learning
Human-Centred Design begins with empathy.
Before solving a problem, designers seek to understand people.
Their goals.
Their frustrations.
Their motivations.
Their behaviours.
Education rarely begins this way.
Instead, many educational systems begin with curriculum documents.
The curriculum defines content.
Teachers design lessons.
Students adapt.
A human-centred perspective reverses this process.
It begins with learners.
Who are they?
What matters to them?
What experiences do they bring?
What barriers prevent participation?
What emotions shape their learning?
Learning becomes meaningful when educational design starts with human understanding rather than institutional requirements.
Technology Does Not Design Learning
Artificial Intelligence has reignited discussions about the future of education.
New technologies promise personalised learning, automated assessment and intelligent tutoring systems.
Yet technology itself neither motivates learners nor creates meaningful educational experiences.
Poorly designed learning remains poorly designed, regardless of how sophisticated the technology becomes.
Conversely, a thoughtful conversation between teacher and learner may create transformational learning without any digital technology.
This observation suggests that technological innovation should follow educational design rather than determine it.
The question should therefore not be
"How can we integrate AI into education?"
but rather
"What kind of learning experience do we wish to create, and how might AI support that experience?"
Technology serves learning.
Learning should never become subordinate to technology.
Designing Conditions Rather Than Outcomes
Perhaps one of the greatest misconceptions in education is the belief that learning itself can be designed.
Learning cannot.
People design conditions.
Learners construct learning.
Educators therefore do not design knowledge.
They design environments.
Interactions.
Feedback.
Reflection.
Participation.
Belonging.
Psychological safety.
Curiosity.
Learning emerges within these conditions.
This distinction shifts educational design away from controlling outcomes towards cultivating possibility.
Beyond Schools
Viewing learning as a design problem extends beyond formal education.
People learn throughout life.
Communities learn.
Patients learn.
Employees learn.
Citizens learn.
Refugees learn.
Older adults learn.
Children learn outside classrooms as much as within them.
Every public service contains learning.
Every digital platform teaches behaviours.
Every museum, library and workplace becomes a learning environment.
Once learning is understood as a design problem, education is no longer confined to educational institutions.
It becomes a societal responsibility.
Towards a Design Philosophy of Education
Thinking of learning as a design problem challenges conventional boundaries between education, design and technology.
It invites educators to become designers.
It encourages designers to recognise learning as an essential dimension of every human experience.
Most importantly, it reminds us that meaningful learning begins not with curriculum documents nor technological innovations, but with people.
Human-centred education is therefore not simply about making learning more engaging.
It is about designing experiences that enable individuals to think differently, act differently and ultimately become different.
Conclusion
The future of education will undoubtedly involve artificial intelligence, immersive technologies and increasingly complex learning ecosystems.
Yet these developments should not distract us from a more fundamental insight.
Learning has always been deeply human.
If learning is a human experience, then it is also a design challenge.
Perhaps the future of education depends less on discovering new technologies than on asking better design questions.
Not
"How should we teach?"
but
"How should we design experiences in which meaningful learning can emerge?"
The distinction may appear subtle.
Its implications, however, are profound.
